Today I reseeded three of the six beds of barley. I thought the rats had gotten to it but there wasn’t much evidence. It was more likely that birds had eaten the seeds at the time of planting or it had something to do with the soil. I should test the soil anyway to see what I’m working with. The smoked stout is now bottled. My first impressions were not very good, but admittedly I haven’t tried a lot of smoked beers. At first what I tasted was like drinking beer out of an ash tray that had a hot dog in it – yuk. A few sips later though, it really grew on me. The smoke tasted just like it had smelled on the day I smoked the malt and it blended well with the roasted character and hop bitterness of the stout. I’m looking forward to tasting it with carbonation.

Hi, my name is Scott & I’ve been following your bolg. I’m glad to see you growing another season. I too now decided to try my hand in growing & malting my own barley. I had a hard time finding where to buy malting barley until I seen the logo on the package of seeds your daughter was holding when you planted on youtube,(Full Circle Seeds right). I also found 5lb. of Colon barley from johnnyseeds.com for $10.50 including shipping. So I have Harrington & Conoln barley to grow this year.. I took 2lb. of the conlon it to make sure I could do the malting process, the rest I’ll use for seeding a 1000 sq.ft. plot. With your guidence it was easy to malt the 2 lbs., which I made 1lb, pale malt & 1lb. carmel malt. I’m really looking forward to this coming seasons project of making a few brews with ultra fresh ingreidents. So I would like to thankyou for starting your endevor, inspiring me to try something new, and all the great info you provided. Scott

Thanks for the blog and all the great info. You’ve inspired me to have a go myself this year and have just sown about 40m2 of “schooner” barley. Luckily I live in a grain growing district so my mate let me take a small bucket from one of his 60 ton silos. So I will be malting the left over grain in July when I’m on leave. I’m even tempted to do my own blog after your example. “brewing beer the hard way – Oz style” but my teenage daughters tell me that would be Waaay to embarrassing. Lol. Thanks again and keep the blogs coming.
